It was formed on 1 January 2009, through the merger of Alkemade and Jacobswoude. Kaag en Braassem consists of 10 towns: Hoogmade, Kaag, Leimuiden, Nieuwe Wetering, Oud-Ade, Oude Wetering, Rijnsaterwoude, Rijpwetering, Roelofarendsveen, and Woubrugge.
